Most hydroplant manus will wind their stators to 
output 120-200 vac if you ask. You transmit 3ø up 
the hill (an extra wire, but only 2/3rd the 
current on any given wire) and step down through 
a 3ø transformer wound on the same core and 
usually configured delta/delta. Since you should 
be able to calculate the frequency based on the 
Head (RPM) you can have the Xformer made for that 
frequency range. Pretty darn efficient. Run the 
secondary wires through a set of diode bridges 
(very well heat sunk) and there you go.
