OK, Hugh, now it's my turn to be missing something, and perhaps you can
explain...
While it's called an alternator, its output is straight DC. An external
regulator supplies varying current to the field coil to control the
alternator's current and voltage. As the alternator's charging output to the
batteries is DC, is there a solution similar to your suggestion below,
without running the entire charging output through a big honkin' diode?

You can get a very smooth 12 volt DC output from the alternator
winding by fitting a separate rectifier.  In fact you can use battery
negative and then use a diode from each AC wire to produce a positive
supply that will only be present when the machine is spinning.  Use
that for the fuel solenoid?
