Thank you all for the info. Todd is right that the Home Power article is the best plain language analysis. I can't find anything better from Knapp, Alsema or others since year 2000. In summary:
1. Once produced, PV consumes nothing and emits nothing other than electricity produced from light.
2. PV embedded energy payback time is substantially less than its expected lifetime.
3. Amorphous thin-film PV has an energy payback time of less than 2 years.
