Many manufactures still use the old red = positive, black = negative
color coding on their equipment pigtails. This can get confusing in the
field where white is negative and black is positive.

So is that black wire negative (grounded) or (hot) positive?

I tend towards using red (or red tape on black wire) and white. That way
there is no black wire confusion. It is something to watch out for
though, as two different standards are in use still... but I believe the
trend is moving away from the traditional red = positive, black =
negative scheme in all systems, even those under 50 volts... probably
even in systems with no grounded conductor.
