Subject: New PV cable Specification.

New PV Cable Specification

Underwriters Laboratories (UL) is in the process of writing a new
specification for a single-conductor cable that will meet the
requirements for cables on ungrounded PV systems as allowed in
Section 690.35 of the 2005 NEC. It will also meet the requirements
of section 690.31(B).

At this time, the draft specification may call for a "Photovoltaic"
cable that is physically tougher than USE-2, will have more sunlight
resistance than USE-2 (700 hours vs 350 hours of accelerated UV
exposure testing), and may be marked "Sunlight Resistant". It may
have the flame retardant additive and may also be marked RHW-2 that
will enable it to be used in conduit inside buildings.

For those wrenches involved in various commercial and industrial
electrical systems, have you come across any cables that have an
insulation that has a rodent repellant as part of the mix? We may
need this based on rodent (squirrels, rats, etc.) damage to cables in
several parts of the country. However, we don't want to run afoul of
any EPA or OSHA regulations on such materials. If you have leads on
such a cable, please e-mail them to me at jwiles at nmsu.edu.

Thanks
