There was recent dialogue about the silicon shortage. Here is the notice for the 2nd Solar Silicon Confererence.

The current silicon feedstock shortage is severely limiting the growth of the solar electricity industry. The 2nd Solar Silicon Conference on April 11, 2005, in Munich, Germany will address this crucial topic for the photovoltaic community. The one-day event is organized by PHOTON International - The Photovoltaic Magazine, the world leading industry publication on PV electricity. The conference is aimed at research and policy decision makers, as well as members of the solar and semiconductor industries.

With the strong growth of the German market in 2004, the global PV industry was caught by surprise. Although no official figures are available yet, it is likely that the last year was the best year for the PV industry ever. The downside of the PV boom: sourcing raw material has become increasingly difficult. And according to experts, this year it won't be any better.

Recently the first silicon manufacturers have announced an increase of their production capacities. And the first solar-grade silicon from special processes is supposed to hit the market soon. But when will this material actually be available? And will it be enough to meet the continuously rising demand for PV?

PHOTON International has created the Solar Silicon conference as the global annual platform to discuss and answer such questions. The 1st Solar Silicon conference in April 2004 was a big success: the major stakeholders being active in this part of the PV business attended our event (and forecasted a solar silicon shortage for at least two years). For the 2nd Solar Silicon Conference in Munich, PHOTON International again has invited representatives from the leading companies that sell silicon to the solar industry, as well as companies that are working on specialized production processes for solar-grade silicon. For the conference program, please go to: www.photon-magazine.com/akademie/program.htm

The registration fee includes entry to the one-day 2nd Solar Silicon Conference with food and drink. Early conference registration will be open until Feb. 1 at a cost of 450 Euro (PHOTON subscribers pay just 400 Euro). After Feb. 1, registration fee will increase to 500 Euro (450 Euro for PHOTON subscribers). We will offer an optional reception (buffet and drinks) in the evening (costs 68 Euro extra). All prices are net prices.

For registration, please print out and fax back attached pdf-form to +49/241-4003-302. For more conference information, please got to: www.photon-magazine.com/akademie/index.htm

If you have any questions, please contact me at any time.

I look forward to welcoming you at the 2nd Solar Silicon Conference.

Sincerely,

Michael Schmela
