Hi Allan,

I have used the Solar Converters, in 48V to 12V system upgrades paralleling
a pair of the 10A units to keep an existing set of trailer batteries
charged, for the last two years without any failures. After living with a
Vanner Equalizer, 30A, here for the last 13 years, center tapping the
upgraded 24V system batteries, a single string of 1476 AH IBE traction
cells, to power the old 12V house lighting and outlet system, I stay away
from center tapping if possible now. One half, the 12V side, of my battery
bank is typically weaker, lower voltage and specific gravity per cell, than
the full 24V half, due to the equalizer not keeping up originally.

I prefer two separate battery banks, 48/12 or 48/24, using the smaller bank
as a capacitor for starting the Sun Frost compressors, etc. The main bank is
not compromised, keeps charged as required by the inverter/chargers, PV,
etc, and the small bank of batteries is trickle charged through the DC
converters from it. If there is a larger load added to the small bank
parallel another DC converter.

Sincerely,

Chris Worcester

Does Vanner offer the Voltmaster in a 48-24 configuration?

And what about using a Solar Converters 48-24 unit as a battery equalizer,
rather than a step-down converter for specific loads. Any experience out
there?
