The issue on your system was not related to having a high voltage PV
array operating close to the MX60 mppt controller (which doesn't know
how close the PV array is...) but I beleive it was an issue of the cold
temperatures causing the voltage to get too high under some conditions
at your altitude and location.
We have made a number of improvements to the MX60 to both handle higher
input voltages (currently 140VDC is the advised max) but also to self
protect itself to a degree under conditions which exceed 140 vdc. The
two units you originally had did not have these improvements.
Bob gave you the correct solution - rewiring your array to a three in
series was probably the best solution for your situation - It allows the
controller to operate a little bit more efficient and still reduces
wiring losses substantially. You also probably don't have any issues
with partial shading on this system - so that's not an area to make any
improvement in.
Thanks for the question - All of us here at OutBack appreciate the
feedback and "testing" our products get by the wrench community.
