I would suggest that the place to judge appropriate use of fine stranded cables is most likely the telecommunications industry.  Large telco switchrooms regularly feature 8,000-10,000 ampere -48V DC plants and extensive use of 750 MCM superflex cabling, often featuring type DLO or other "non-approved" markings.  There is an abundance of experience with very high power DC at a voltage many RE contractors deal with, and certainly some wisdom to be had there.
