To add to Richard's comments.  I use a DirecPC two way ethernet modem (no
hub) and it too draws around 30 watts including my wireless access point.
As to your question about powering down.  It not only has no problem with
power down but tech support has told me that it is actually good to power it
down occasionally to clear the modem and get it to cycle correctly, to
ensure the best connection.  Since the ethernet modem now contains the proxy
software that used to run on a dedicated computer under the old USB based
modems, that software is forced to update itself automatically, if
necessary, and re-initialize its connection to the Network Operations
Center.

This satellite system, absent a bit of latency issues and the differences in
transmit rates upload/download, is a great system for off-grid homes.

How much power does a Satellite Internet hookup use?

I assume that you can disconnect them from power with no unintended
consequences.
I have customers with satellite tv setups that switch off the dish/tv setup
for zero phantom power draw. This does not bother the satellite tv system.
