hybrid grid tie [RE-wrenches]

Although the listings of the OutBack and SMA inverters do not include
using them in this "island" configuration - there is nothing in the
UL1741 standard that addresses this type of configuration. I do not see
any problem with using them this way - of course the inspector has the
ultimate authority.

I also do not think that it is a real issue to use the equipment this
way - the outback inverter is operating simply as a UPS type device and
the SMA is still operating as a grid-tie inverter (with all of it
islanding protection systems unchanged). When connected to the grid the
OutBack inverter is basically just connecting the SMA to the grid
through an internal contactor. When a utility power outage occurs
either the OutBack drops the grid and picks up the load and the SMA or
the SMA drops off because of the islanding detection and then the
OutBack picks up the load and the SMA eventually reconnects.
