Depending on the utility and the state, this may or may not be right. The
definition of "interconnection" can vary. In some states, producing power on
site, even if it does not net meter, is "interconnection", if the power that
is produced goes into the same AC system that the utility power does. The
argument is that if the on site system has certain types of failures, it
could send power back onto the utility grid and cause problems. (Not my
theory, theirs.)

So check this before you just make the assumption that no utility agreement
is required to avoid the most unpleasant of surprises.

Outback is working up a solution that might suit you Darryl, but it
isn't available quite yet. I forget exactly what they're calling it,
zero metering or something like that. Using a smart shunt that senses AC
power flow, the system will do everything *except* spin the meter
backwards. It'll feed your household AC panel using renewable energy,
and/or battery energy just enough to balance power use, but never enough
to spin the meter backwards. You won't need an intertie agreement,
because you won't be intertied...it'll just use renewable energy, and
stored battery energy *first*. Only if the batteries get down to a
preset voltage, will it start to buy utility power.

Sounds like a neat way to make the best use of all the renewable energy
available, and treat the utility like a back-up. It's also legal in
States where intertie isn't a (legal) option...and maybe less hassle
everyplace else.

I guess we know better than to ask "when", but it's supposed to be part
of the UL1741 software package, which means it's getting pretty close,
since they got ETL approval last week or so.

Hello to all
I just seem to be out of ideas.

I have customer who wants wind, solar  and UPS.  The
local utility does not allow the wind to be net
metered however it is allowed to reduce load.  The
solar can be net metered.  If the grid goes down he
wants the wind and solar to both charge the batteries
to extend the UPS time.  How should I configure the
system?  How would you answer this problem?
