Allan and Dean,

Be very careful about making assumptions about XHHW-2 wire. It has to say
"sunlight resistant" directly on the jacket, or it must be assumed to not be
sunlight resistant. Service entrance and tray cables are the only conductors
that are all tested for sunlight resistance. I have seen XHHW-2 that fell
apart in sunlight. Service entrance cables are also treated with rodent
repellant--tray cable generally is not. I have seen rabbits chew briefly on
USE-2 cable, but they usually only take one or two bites before they have
had enough and turn their attention to the connectors (did I just make
another case for conduit wire--totally unintended I assure you).

With ungrounded systems being allow explicitely in the 2005 code, we need to
see two conductor cables with connectors that are all sunlight and rodent
resistant.

Bill.

Much to my suprise, we concluded that XHHW-2 is rated for exposure to=20 the
sun.

Maybe a commentary from John Wiles would be useful at this time.

Thanks for the forward: Here is a non-answer.

The October 2003 UL Wire and Cable Marking Guide indicates that XHHW and
XHHW-2 as single wires may be sunlight resistant if so marked.
