  Thanks Darryl,

  So, now what do you think about your choice?? I've been working on a 
design for a (very) remote aeration system that goes into deep-freeze mode 
for months at a time, so the thought was to do something similar - but the 
oh-so-cold ground has me wondering about batteries of any kind. Not to 
mention the possibility of theft.

  I used a plastic electrical enclosure with gasket.  I
  also insulated the outside with styrofoam.

  The batteries were Concorde AGM. a starved electrolite
  Valve regulated battery.  I at that time believed that
  it was more stable to freezeing. and of course low
  maintanance.
