Our Backwoods Solar Electric Systems year 2004 catalog will be sent
at
once, no charge. Meanwhile we will be happy to answer questions by email.
Most of the catalog is also on our web-site www.backwoodssolar.com if you
want a preview, but the print version makes it easier for planning your
  solar power.

Our catalog is specifically for the needs of folks living or building
where utility lines are not available. We started out 2 miles from the
closest power lines 25 years ago, and $25,000 was the price the utility
asked to extend lines to our land. Instead, we have been delighted with
running our home and shop and business on our own power for a lot less
than
$25,000. Most of our customers spend from $3500 to $18,000 for a remote
home
power system, though you can get something started for as little as $2600.

For reasons of cost and practicality, such home made electricity is of
limited quantity. Usually 1 to 3 or maybe 5 kilowatt hours a day are
produced by the systems described (unless you have a water-power site
which
may produce much more power at even lower cost). The trick to making this
practical is selecting appliances and lights that use much less power to
do
the same job, and designing the home to use about 10% as much as a typical
US home. When so set up, we can get 90% of the benefits from about 10% as
much power. The small amount of free power you have each day can go a long
way and give a mostly middle class US lifestyle. Be sure to read the first
30 pages of the catalog where we explain what you can do and can't do.
Appliance selection guide and home wiring advice there is most important
for
achieving the energy savings that makes it all possible. Next there are 6
examples from small to large solar electric systems, with total costs for
  each.

Good luck with your projects, and let us know how it works out. If you
need
more information, we do answer the mail and I am glad to help with your
questions. Email to info at backwoodssolar.com or write to us at 1589 Rapid
Lightning Ck Rd, Sandpoint, Idaho 83864, or call us at 208-263-4290, or
fax
  (208) 265-4788.

  Jeff and wrenches,
Even if you brush off the dish, if the storm is intense enough, it's like
throwing up a sheet in front of it and you will lose service. BTW. I use
spray-on PAM or equivalent to keep the snow build-up at a minimum.

This string has been very interesting! I've been using Direcway for 3-4
years now and for the most part it has been a nightmare. I use the older
dual modem 4000 system and continue to hear that the newest 6000 system is
the deal. I talk to customers all of the time that use satelite and it
seems
many more problems w/Direcway than Starband. This seems to have swapped
w/the intro of the DW6000. I like the fact that Direcway is $10/mo cheaper
and the equip. is covered as long as you subscribe (I've replaced many
parts
many times!). Starband is covered for up to 2 years I believe and in some
cases 1 year, depending on your contract. This would be a major factor to
me. Customer service w/Direcway is fair and about on par with many
computer
tech support Co's (in other words, long wait times are common and thick
  accents from India to dicpher).

I swore if I ever got the nerve and cash to upgrade I would go to Starband
but after reading this string it looks like DW6000 is the better bet. I
have
no issues w/intense rainstorms but the snow can cause problems that go
away
when I brush off the dish. If I lived in frequent snow country I would
make
sure I had easy access to the dish (I do anyway).

  Good luck!
