Hi Travis,
The best source of information on earth storage of thermal energy is
the International Ground Source Heat Pump Association IGSHPA
http://www.igshpa.okstate.edu/
Basically heat transfer and thermal capacity is a function of the water
trapped in the soil around a "ground source" dry sand is the worst soil
type for heat storage, it has a poor heat transfer quoefficient, and a
low heat capacity. In successful applications a heat pump is used to
move heat between the ground source and the habitable portions of the
building. Information is available from Waterfurnace, Tetco, Hydroheat,
Florida Heat Pump and others. Wrightsoft http://www.wrightsoft.com/
has software for designing heating and cooling systems of all types
including ground source heat pump sytems.
