NABCEP [RE-wrenches]

Several years ago the Federal EPA had a "Greenlights" energy reduction
program to replace low efficiency lighting in schools and government
buildings. To avoid the "siding salesman lighting expert" and an
influx of junk lighting products, this is what the EPA did:

1. Started a very hard testing and certification program to make sure
lighting audits would be completed by qualified lighting
professionals.

2. Promoted the new program in national facility management
publications.

3. Started a web based referral so building owners could locate
"certified" professionals to conduct these audits.

4. Gave out awards to the energy auditors and plaques to the building
owners who achieved a successful lighting reduction program.

5. Provided each "certified" lighting professional with an official
logo, and instructions on how and how not to use it in ads, sales
brochures, and phone book.

Perhaps we could use some of their successful ideas here:

NABCEP already has a good testing program in place, and past posts
have addressed a need for a logo, but you also need to promote the
program to the public.

Awards and national exposure of the better solar installations would
go a long way to help identify the best installers, and promote owners
willing to spend the big bucks to do it right! Maybe HomePower could
identify award wining NABCEP projects with a "blue ribbon" around the
NABCEP logo when they do an article on these solar installations.

Just my 2 cents worth,

Jeff Yago
