I also suspect the switch is chattering when closing or opening and
causing the problem. Transformers need a clean on and off switching or
they can "saturate" and make nasty noises and cause other problems.
Try running the pump on the inverter without the switch or with the
switch wired to the 240 vac side of the pump. If the problem goes away
then it is the switch not the transformer.
Using both poles of the switch is a good idea - but I usually put them
in series instead of parallel for 120 VAC. A "dual break" series
connection can reduce the pitting and arcing of the contacts. This
assumes of course that the switch is rated to handle the 120 vac current
draw.
Also - running an inverter from another inverter is not a problem - most
devices like motordrives just immediately rectify the AC back into DC
anyways before it is actually used. We "burn-in" all the FX inverters
here at OutBack every day by having one FX run as a charger off another
FX operating as a inverter on the same battery bank. Its more efficient
than buring up the power of an inverter in an AC load bank.
