finding those rafters... [RE-wrenches]

Here's how we do it:

We locate carefully where we THINK the rafter is.  We draw an outline of
the mounting foot.  Within (hopefully) that outline, we drill a series of
3/16 pilot holes to locate both edges of the rafter.  The middle of the
rafter, curiously, is halfway between those edges!  (It is sometimes
difficult with that small a pilot bit to actually discern if you are
drilling into a rafter or experiencing resistance from the bit against the
roofing and sheeting.  If in doubt, a small piece of wire can plumb the
hole to determine if there is air or wood at the bottom of it.)
