lightning arrestors [RE-wrenches]

"I am wondering if inverters would be more prone to damage from
utility
line surges than devices within a house, such as computers, TV's and
audio equipment?"

I am no expert on lightning, but we recently had two fairly new SW5548
with burned circuit boards on stand alone residential PV systems with
no connection to the utility grid.

I think as manufacturers of PV equipment start using more and more
voltage sensitive electronic "chips" to achieve more programming
features, we will see more of these failure issues. As for me, I miss
the failed electronic components I could change out in the field with
pliers and a screw driver!

P.S. How about solar manufacturers building in "harder" electronic
front end filters on their equipment that everybody knows will be
exposed to a higher risk of both lightning and grid voltage spikes and
ground problems than your average toaster. As a matter of fact, some
of these devices did turn into toasters!
