Matt,
The direct burial wire nuts I have seen are very large and expensive. I
think they are overkill in comparison to the waterproof versions. Are you
referring to a set screw direct burial version? If so how much do they
typically run?

Yes they do. Look for the direct-burial type nuts; they come filled with a
very messy water-proofing gorp which resists laundry detergent.
