Kurt,
I have had a case of bulging positive posts on Trojan L16's installed in
99. It was a grid tie system and the batteries all failed after an initial
cell failure on one of two strings. Final autopsy on the 8 batteries was 3 ok
and the rest with one or two cells dead. It was my first view of the SW4024
trying in vain to get the voltage up to 24. Unfortunately I had installed the
e-meter in a less than ideal location for visibility to the customer so she
didn't notice the abnormally low system voltage. I now supply a multimeter with
every system so I can have customers check for failed cells and throw the grid
transfer switch and shut down the system if necessary til I can check it out.
Also I am thinking that some kind of a warning buzzer or light might be in
order. Maybe triggered by a spare relay in the SW. In this case, the customer
had been adding more than usual amounts of water. She always checked the
batteries monthly... more often than necessary, I thought.
