Windy says:

> Wrap galv. pipe when in concrete? I don't what construction officials

say, but I've seen water windmill towers that have been in concrete
for over 50 years, and they generally look fine.

All:

To my knowledge, wrapping Plumbing or Structural Galvy Iron when it's in
Concrete is not required by National Codes. For what it's worth,
virtually nobody is running Galvy Plumbing Pipe for these applications
anymore anyway.

This points out another difference between Electrical and Other
Codes.... When running "Rigid" or "IMC" Conduit through a slab or
footing, it is required to be dielectrically isolated (wrapped) from the
concrete. I believe this is due to the "Electro-Galvy" or "EG" as
opposed to "Hot Dipped" process used in manufacturing conduit. It may
also relate to the "Fields" created when current flows through the
conduit, which cause an accelerated corrosion in the conduit.

For what it's worth, I've walked up to many "older" pool and other
electrical installations that didn't have di-electric insulation between
the conduits and the concrete and were literally rotted away at the
point where they became exposed to atmosphere as well as below grade.
One of the factors may be that the conduit generally passes from Exposed
Device to Concrete Embedded to Direct Earth Contact to Concrete Embedded
to Exposed Equipment. Electrolysis is an ugly thing.

One thing that may be worth mentioning for "the future" is that
Structural Steel used to support PV or other Electrical Generating
Equipment may be required to have a di-electric separation from the slab
or footings. It may be worth considering.... And doing for the sake of
longevity of your installations???
