c-40 battery charging [RE-wrenches]

This sounds like a shorted cell problem along with way too high a charge
current. I've never actually seen a battery catch fire in over 20 years
in this business. How about anyone else?

Hello, I only experianced it once, which is enough. I
do not know if it effects all batteries, but I know it
happens in sealed AGM batteries. It seems when
charging batteries they generate heat. As they heat
they lose voltage, and if one paralleled string gets
hotter it gets more current, and gets hotter. At some
point the hot string is low enough in voltage to getr
current from the cooler string. Now both the charger
and the battery string add heat to the hot string and
it explodes and makes lots of fire.

A similar case occurerd on the east cost, where 4
parallel strings of 48 volt concordes started to
smell, the owner shut off teh charger, shortly there
after the rack caught fire and burned the house down.
