Joel,

I'm sure you and most others on list already know, but for the benefit of
others, only 1 BTU is needed to raise the temperature of a pound of water 1
degree F. It takes more if you're trying to change a pound of ice to a pound of
water, or boiling a pound of water to make steam, because you're changing state
and there's more work involved.
