Wire nuts have been given a bad rap by some but they meet Code >>IF<<
you to use the ones rated for outdoor use (filled with Goop).  Most
people forget this part and this will lead to corrosion of the
connection in time.  
Just to be sure I like to tape them with a high quality electrical tape
after making the connection

Bill:

I have been using the Siemens HNF361.  I was using a Square D
distribution
block to combine strings, when necessary.  After a while, it seemed like
over-kill.  I am now putting the two string leads from the roof under a
wire nut with a pig tail.  Does this seem OK to you?  The connectors are
rated for 600V (does not specify AC or DC).  Connector is rated for 3
#10
stranded copper wires.
