Australian Thermal Tower [RE-wrenches]

Allan,

I caught it on the Drudgereport over the weekend. Pretty interesting
project and proven to work with the small 50kw one in Spain. Is it a solar
plant or a wind plant? Had this discussion with some real RE pro's over
dinner last night and concluded its a wind project powered by solar
generated wind! My only question and maybe someone with a meteorlogical
background can comment: If there were hundreds (or even thousands) of these
around the globe(desert locations) would there be any impact dumping that
much hot air into the atmosphere at the relatively low level of 1 km?

Anyone catch this? I caught it on the Grist webmail:

An Australian power company is planning to build the world's tallest
structure, in the name of a global campaign to encourage renewable
energy use. Energy company Environmission plans to construct a solar
tower in the middle of the Australian outback that would soar 3,300
feet into the air, or more than twice as high as the world's tallest
building, Toronto's Canadian National Tower. The structure, which
has the backing of the Australian government, is expected to cost
about $500 million. Once completed, the tower will provide enough
electricity for 200,000 homes and save more than 700,000 metric tons
of greenhouse gases.
