All of the OutBack FX or VFX series inverter/charger have the same motor
starting current limits. Each will give you 70 amps "peak"
(milliseconds) and 50 amps "rms" (seconds+). This is only part of the
complete story however - since the OutBack inverters are able to
actively limit the current to these maximum levels without over-current
tripping like some older designs. This allows starting of larger motors
with less current...

The first "quad" system was installed in Haiti last spring - it is
running a small hotel which has a satelite internet and telephone
system. This system does charge from the utility - but the power is off
80% of the time in Haiti currently so they also have a good sized PV
array. The operation of the system has been very good (after a few
initial issues were resolved).
Many other of the quad systems have been installed as well - I know of
at least 10 in Hawaii and probably more in CA. There would have been
more except that many installers have been telling us that two of the
OutBack inverters have been able to meet the needs of the customers
where they would have sold them 8 or even 11 kW of SWs previously.
We are just now finishing up the first field installation of a
"Dual-Quad" system - 28.8 kW continuous @ 48 vdc (eight of the VFX3648s
in a series-parallel 120/240 VAC configuration). It is powering an
off-grid PV powered office building near downtown LA. More details and
photos will follow.
