Insuring Homes with SDHW [RE-wrenches]

Wrenches,

The following is from a SDHW installer in Southern Oregon.

Just a quick note to see if you have run across any information that the
insurance industry is targeting solar installations as high risk. A customer
called me today to schedule removal of their solar hot water system to avoid
being cancelled. The company, Mutual of Omaha, is apparently dropping their
customers that have solar unless they have it removed. The customer looked
around to see about changing companies and they were informed that this is a
developing trend throughout the insurance industry. Needless to say this
will have a chilling effect throughout our industry. This is a serious
challenge (if true) to the future of solar throughout the country. I'd
appreciate it if you could inquire within your circle to see if this is
becoming a problem, and if a remedy is available.

Has anyone else run into this? I contacted a Mutual of Omaha Rep. who told
me they weren't targeting solar specifically, rather they are targeting
potential sources/causes for mold. He said "as these systems get old and
start leaking mold becomes a big problem and a source of many claims". This
could devastate the solar hot water industry. Wonder how long before they
target PV systems for such reasons as "the roof leaked where the PV was
mounted"?
