Wrenches:

Peter asked:

> Was the inverter "on" when the display wasn't?

Yes.

The LED's on the Sunny-Boys are the primary indicator of the operating
status of the inverter. The LCD Display is an "Option", hence the suffix
"SBD" on the model #.

This is relevant to a bigger issue, affecting all "Displays" on all brands
of Inverters.

We often believe the information displayed on the LC Displays. This can
lead to thinking there is either A: Something wrong or, B: Something is
better than it is.

>From rather extensive testing done by both myself personally and our techs,
we have come to the understanding that the display is for "reference
purposes only" and not the true, "end all to the n-th degree" answer.

For the record: Our testing and "over time with utility grade PV kwH meter
readings on a monthly basis" have shown the SMA displays to be the closest
to accurate across the parameters displayed.

There have been some failures of the display, but SMA has promptly and
without question supplied the proper support. Thank you Grass Valley! One
of the nicest features of the SMA is that the information is stored
"on-board" and is not lost due to display failures.

The display is just that, a display. Kinda like the window you look
through. Just because there's a wall there, instead of a window, doesn't
mean that the stuff on the other side isn't there. If that "window" you are
looking through is one of those glass block windows, then the stuff on the
other side will appear distorted from what it looks like with nothing
between you and it....

Displays have a purpose. I prefer to understand that purpose and rely on it
for only that. Customers like having a readily available "readout" of what
their system is doing happens to be one of those purposes. We, as
professionals, should understand that sometimes there is "something on the
other side of the window" that we can't see through that window.

Hey, The Sun's Shining!!!!
