TV interference [RE-wrenches]

Frank / Bill:

Inverters with microprocessors must meet the same emissions standards
for both radiated and conducted noise as your home PC. Many PC's say
they are only Class B rated for commercial applications even though they
are routinely used in residential applications. Adding the necessary
filtering etc. to an inverter to meet Class A is expensive and also cost
you some efficiency. The FCC part 15 requirements have largely been
ignored by inverter manufacturers here in the US but they are Federal
requirements nonetheless. As our market matures I would expect the FCC
compliance issue to become more and more significant.

Step one in the interference question should be:

Is the interfering equipment FCC compliant for the installation location
?, i.e. residential (Class A = very strict) or commercial (Class B =
less strict).

If the answer is no then, according to the FCC Part 15 regulations, the
operator of the interfering equipment is required to cease operation.
Obviously this is the extreme position but the folks with interference
would be totally within their rights to demand this.

If the answer is yes, then you start talking about relocating antennas,
filters, etc.

If you have any questions, or if I can be of any further assistance,
please do not hesitate to contact me.

John Berdner

Frank,

The FCC recommendations are always to keep antennas away from noise
sources.
Even if an inverter has passed an FCC class rating does not mean it will
not
interfere. Read the instructions. It says if you experience problems
more or
reorient antennas. You can only filter an SW so much, proper antenna
placement is a better option.

Bill.

Hey Frank,

It is always the lower channels. There is actually a pretty big
separation between the lower and upper VHF bands with FM radio coming in
between the two. If I remember right the separation is between channels
7 and 8 but maybe it is 6 and 7. I also get some interference on a
favorite FM station that is low on the radio dial (88.9). Often a
stronger signal will result in less interference and from that
perspective and an amplifier of the type that is installed at the
antenna may help. Of course 75 ohm coax is much better than 300 ohm
twin-lead.

On a similar note does anyone know of an antenna amp that runs off
12VDC? A radio shack unit that used to work well is no longer
available.

Good luck -- Kurt

Hiya fellow wrenches,
Anyone had experience with sinewave inverter interfering with standard
TV
antenna reception? Ever since the antenna was moved closer to where the
inverter/battery bank is located, they have experienced bad reception in
the
lower channels.
