Nickel-Iron Batteries [RE-wrenches]

Got a call yesterday from a contractor in over his head on a vary large
system install that we have been asked to check out(I have not been there
yet so don't know all the details).
It seems the owner insisted on a very large bank of nickel-iron batteries -
no I don't know why he did this or where he got them, but think they are new
(maybe he retired from the railroad!).
Richard had a great reply to a Letter to the editor in this month's issue of
HomePower about re-conditioning older NiFe batteries. However, it was my
understanding that these are new and are not holding charge. I know that
NiFe batteries have half the voltage per cell as lead-acid batteries and a
voltage drop that is twice as fast on discharge, but not sure about testing
and charging. Also not sure if the high voltage drop on discharge is a
problem for inverters.
I would appreciate any suggestions on testing and charge rate settings.
