Solar themal piping [RE-wrenches]

Hey Larry,

Copper pipe that will be buried should be Type L, and has blue writing
on the side, as opposed to Type M, which has red. There are some good
pipe insulations available. Rubatex can withstand high stagnation
temperatures well but degrades rapidly in sunlight. Rubatex is also
very pliable and easy to slide over pipes with 45’s and 90’s pre
soldered. This would be my choice for buried pipes, and for a bullet
proof installation you can even put insulated pipes inside 3” PCV
schedule 40. Make sure the insulation has at least a ¾” wall thickness.
You will probably be installing low voltage sensor wires as well, keep
these away from direct contact with the copper pipe. Either put the
sensor wires inside a separate ½” PVC pipe or tie-strapped to exterior
of the pipe insulation.

I hope this is helpful.

Graham
