RE Bird Kills [RE-wrenches]

The most twisted aspect of the bird kill theory is that some of the
loudest dissenting voices are from individuals and groups who just want
more birds to shoot. I recall about eleven years ago when Ducks
Unlimited was working on their Piute Project, which involved pumping
ground water up to provide resting areas for ducks on the flyway
migratory route (as well as a private place for officers to hunt since
this was on Edwards Air Force Base land). I knew the late chairman of
DU, Albert McKee, and he was very concerned about the number of ducks
that would be killed flying through the Tehachapi wind farms. A couple
of years ago I met a person named Jeff Kober who’s primary job is
servicing the large turbines in Tehachapi, which disconnect when the
main plug is pulled by three 360 degree rotations of the top of the
turbine. Jeff mentioned to me that he had never seen dead ducks, very
few dead birds but a considerable number of dead bats at the base of the
wind towers. I don’t know why bird kills are still an issue, but I did
listen to Senator Murkowski of Alaska, addressing the Senate on CSPAN,
call wind turbines “nothing more than Quisinart’s for birds”. He also
mentioned that renewable energy was a one legged stool that couldn’t
stand on its own merits. Perhaps this stool should be turned upside
down for him and others to sit on.

P.S. DU does do a lot of good work and habitat restoration, which
results in larger numbers of healthier ducks.
