generator question [RE-wrenches]

After years of using different brands, we finally "standardized" on one
generator for off grid SW inverter systems to keep life simple. We only use
the Kohler RMY 1800 RPM series propane units in the 6.5 to 10 KW size range.
This unit is shipped from the factory wired for split load 120/240 using a
two pole breaker, but our local distributor only charges about $90 extra to
replace the two pole with a single pole breaker and re-wire generator feed
for 100% output at 120 volt. This unit has a multi-wire generator section
that allows several voltage arrangements.

One word of caution however, we only recommend the 1800 RPM version. We
have had several existing systems that started out with a single Trace SW40
powered from a 1800 RPM propane Kohler that finally died of old age, which
were replaced with the same kW size 3600 RPM unit. Everything stayed the
same - loads, inverter, batteries.

The inverters now give "error" messages when trying to bulk charge which are
caused by a slower "load pickup" for the lower torque 3600 RPM generator.
This generator has a fairly complex electronics governor speed/load control
board that does not like sudden loads on the "lighter duty" engine. We have
had no maintenance or repair problems with the 1800 RPM units although any
propane generator will have more carbon build up on the valves than
gasoline.
