"Renewable energy fantasy" [RE-wrenches]

My response to Mr. Nethaway:

Mr. Nethaway, who is really fantasizing? Do you really believe that the
oil and gas industries are not "propped up" with subsidies? What
percentage of the defense budget has nothing to do with the flow of oil?
And what percentage of that budget would it take to keep the sun shining
and the wind blowing? If a given a level playing field, renewable
energies would be the no-brainer choice.

Further, how are the "developing nations joining the ranks..." that
"...must become larger consumers of energy" going to finance large
infrastructure to get more electricity? What's your time frame?
Investing the dollars it takes to build one power plant on small,
home-sized solar electric systems would give a large percentage of the
population of a "developing" nation more energy than they could use in a
fraction of the time. Not only that, but they would have true
independence from outside influences. Gee, that might even work here!

Renewable energy is not the cure-all. Nothing is. But, do not let
perfection be the enemy of the good.
