Greetings,

* See below for information on the Solar Energy International
workshops in the Pacific NW this October. Registration is ahead of
past years, and the two, 6-day workshops may fill up before the end
of the summer, so register early. The PV workshop will be installing
a large (3+ KW) off-grid PV system. The wind workshop will be
installing an African Windpower 3.6 meter wind generator on a 145
foot guyed tower.

* I am looking for local and regional publicity for our Introduction
to Renewable Energy Workshop, October 11-13 of this year. This is an
overview workshop -- perfect for your friends or relatives who want
to learn about RE. The Friday night slide presentation is free and
open to the public. On Saturday and Sunday, we'll cover
solar-electric, wind-electric, and microhydro-electric systems, with
guest speakers and tours of working systems.

* April 14-19 of 2003, I am bringing Hugh Piggott of Scoraig Wind
Electric back to teach a Homebuilt Wind Generators workshop again.
His first workshop here, last October, was fantastic, and we had to
turn a number of people away. This is advance notice of this 2003
workshop.

* I would like to do an electric vehicle (EV) conversion workshop
here in 2003 with EV specialists Mike Brown and Shari Prange. I'm
looking for a prospective EV owner who wants a high quality EV, and
is ready to invest about US$10,000 and a donor car. The donor car
MUST be a VW Rabbit (not Golf) sedan, convertible, or possibly a
Rabbit pickup, and Electro Automotive's conversion kit will be used.

* Sorry for any duplications with this message. If you don't want to
receive these (very sporadic) messages, let me know and I will
immediately remove you from the list.

Please pass this message along to anyone who might be interested. And
let me know if you have any questions about the NW SEI workshops.

Regards,

Ian

INTRODUCTION TO RENEWABLE ENERGY
Participants will get a broad overview of renewable energy
technology, including photovoltaic (solar-electric) systems,
wind-electric systems, and small hydroelectric systems. Through
classroom sessions and tours of actual working systems, students will
see equipment in action, and talk with people using this technology.

Topics Include:
* Solar, Wind, & Hydro Site Analysis
* Residential RE System Sizing
* PV, Wind, & Hydro Equipment
* Controllers, Batteries, Inverters, and Appliances
* Demonstration Lab Exercises
* Tours of Local Systems

SOLAR-ELECTRIC (PV) DESIGN & INSTALLATION
Participants in the PV Design & Installation workshop learn how to
use PV (photovoltaic) technology to produce their own electricity
from the sun through practical design and installation of PV systems.
Participants learn system sizing, site analysis, hardware
specification, and component selection. The workshop covers typical
applications and case study examples. Install a complete, operational
system in the field with current renewable energy equipment. This
workshop is for the novice who wants to use PV, and for those seeking
employment in the renewable energy industry.

Topics Include:
* Home Applications
* Basics of Electricity
* Solar Site Analysis
* PV System Components
* Energy Efficient Appliances
* PV System Sizing
* Component Specification
* Electrical Wiring
* Safety Procedures
* Solar Water Pumping
* PV for Lesser Developed Countries

Other Activities Include:
* Tours of PV Residences
* Industry Representatives
* Laboratory Exercises
* Hands-on Field Installation

WIND-ELECTRIC SYSTEMS
Participants in this workshop will learn to design and install
commercial wind generator systems. The workshop will cover system
sizing, site analysis, safety issues and hardware specification.
Learn about the different commercially available wind turbines and
the advantages and disadvantages of each. Get hands-on experience
installing a full-size wind system. The workshop also discusses
solar/wind hybrid systems.

Topics Include:
* Aerodynamics
* Generators
* Alternators
* Induction Machines
* Tower Design
* Site Analysis
* System Sizing
* Safety Considerations
* Energy Storage
* Legal Issues
* Wind-PV Hybrid Systems

Logistics and Lodging Information for 2002 SEI NW Workshops

Solar Energy International will offer three NW workshops in 2002:
Introduction to Renewable Energy, October 11-13, $200
Solar-Electric Design & Installation, October 14-19, $550
Wind-Electric Systems, October 21-26, $550

All workshops will be based on Guemes Island, a ten minute ferry ride
from Anacortes, Washington. Complete directions, map, ferry, and
airporter schedules will be sent to all registered students.
Roundtrip ferry fares are $5.25 for car and driver and $1.25 per
passenger.

For those flying into Sea-Tac airport, Anacortes is about a two hour
drive. Bellingham airport is about a one hour drive. Renting a car at
the airport will be most convenient, but there is an airport shuttle
with regular stops in Anacortes (call 800-423-4219). Cost is $30 one
way. Call or e-mail Ian about carpooling with other students, and
about pick-up at the Guemes Island ferry dock.

Lodging on the island is available at the Guemes Island Resort, a
somewhat rustic, older resort on a beautiful beachfront site, with
mountain, water, and island views. Six cabins with two to three beds
each are available for students to share, or you can rent a whole
cabin, as available. These lodgings are first come, first served at
$10 for floor space, $20 for dorm bed, $30 for semi-private bed or
rustic private room , and $40 for less rustic private room. All
prices are per bed, per night. Camping and RV spaces are also
available. Call or e-mail Ian to reserve lodging. Prepayment (by
check payable to Ian Woofenden) is required to hold lodging. The
resort management will not be dealing with reservations or questions.

We encourage you to try to stay at the resort for the whole workshop
session. We will be having informal sessions in the evenings with our
guest speakers, as well as social gatherings. It's an excellent
opportunity to connect with other students, staff, and guest
speakers. The resort is in a beautiful location, and all
accommodations have full kitchen facilities.

There is a small store (Anderson's) at the ferry dock that has a fair
selection of groceries. They make excellent lunches to order, and
have breakfast rolls and coffee. There are no dinner restaurants on
the island, so you will need to bring or purchase and prepare
whatever food you want. If you want the best price and selection,
stop at one of the two supermarkets in Anacortes.

We do encourage everyone to try to stay on the island, since the last
ferry run during the week is at 6 PM. If you stay in one of the many
motels in Anacortes, you will miss our evening sessions, and spend a
lot of time in the ferry line. For Anacortes motel information, call
the Anacortes Visitor Information Center at 360-293-3832 or call me
for specific recommendations.

The classroom and lab sessions will be held at the Guemes Island
Community Center, which is about a half mile up Guemes Island Road
from the ferry dock (you'll pass the store, one house and the church
on your right, and then come to the Community Center, also on your
right). All workshops begin at 9 AM, but please come about a half
hour early on the first day for registration. Our sessions will end
at around 5 PM each day.

We will be doing some touring of renewable energy sites with all
three workshops. The Intro to RE workshop will spend Saturday and
Sunday afternoons touring working systems. The PV workshop will also
include tours, and two days of hands-on PV system installation. The
wind workshop will include tours of local wind energy systems as time
allows.

Please come prepared for weather (it can be wet here in October, but
the weather might also be quite nice), and prepared for work. Many
participants like to bring their own basic hand tools, and boots and
raingear are a good idea.

I look forward to meeting you and working with you during the
workshops. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to call
or e-mail me.
