Grid-Tie Inverter Warranty [RE-wrenches]

Wrenches:

A manufacturer in development of a grid-tie inverter line asked me my
thoughts on warranties yesterday.  I, of course, provided my thoughts but
told him the "Real World is outside SMUD's jurisdiction".

This person was asking about two separate markets....Resi & 10kW-100kW.  Any
feedback you have on either/both is appreciated.  We don't often have the
opportunity to provide this kind of feedback until "after the fact".  I vote
we use it for the betterment of all.

I would request your thoughts on the following questions: (On or Off-list)

1.  What is a reasonable warranty period?  (30 days, 2 year, 5 year, 100
years????)
2.  What should the warranty cover? (Parts, labor, on-site service, etc.)
3.  Does your state currently have a "rebate" program, and, if so, what are
the warranty requirements?
4.  What, if any, part does the inverter warranty play in your decision to
spec or not-spec an inverter?
5.  How often is the inverter warranty part of the discussion with your
customer / end-user? (Are they concerned about it, etc?)
6.  What do you need in an inverter?  (Think, "not just technical" here.
Documentation, Mfr. Support, Options, Name Brand, etc.)
