AEI Multimode [RE-wrenches]

Doug - there is a communications adapter available *now* for $100 that gives
you a very smooth, and about to be smoother, windows program for customer
use, and a DOS program that lets you monitor all internal variables, change
setpoints, etc.
Warnings: the DOS program needs hand-holding from our end, as it is about to
be replaced by the next rev of the windows program. The DOS program does
not work under Windows 2000..

The 240V option should be out before the end of the year. It will require a
software upgrade and a phone cable connecting the two units in question.
Until then, two units can be installed with their grid connections to L1 and
L2, and their load outputs to the two line connections of a sub-panel. As
they will not operate in anti-phase till the 240V software is available, no
240V loads should be connected, and most important, separate 50A neutral
conductors should be run from each inverter to the load sub-panel, else
neutral overloading could occur.

Regards

Rob Wills

Hi Rob,

Almost everything I've read about the MM5 has me drooling...MPPT
tracking charge control...built-in GFI protection...three 50-amp inputs
(up to 5,000 watts)...no night time battery charging from the utility,
in many ways this seems to be the battery-based Intertie inverter we've
always wanted. I'm ready to buy a pair for my own shop that's under
construction now. But a careful reading of the Owner's Manual seems to
indicate that without the "optional" remote control there are no
adjustments possible, and operational feedback is limited to a couple
LED lights. The remote control doesn't seem to be available yet. Without
the ability to modify setpoints or see how much amperage is flowing it
doesn't seem that the MM is ready for prime-time. Please prove me wrong!
Also, is it possible to stack a pair of MMs for 240v output?

Best regards,

Hi Joel.

Well we believe that the Multimode is ready for prime-time - but we are
ramping up production in a controlled way, and holding lots of hands in
the
field and sorting out some minor bugs (mainly setpoints at this stage).
We
have shipped about 50 units with plans to have another 150 shipped by
Christmas. The backlog is unfortunately quite long, but we expect to
catch
up within a month.

Our highest profile site at this point is an installation at the Davis,
CA,
food coop (the center of political correctness in the USA).

The main reason that we feel confident that the multimode is ready is
that
it is not a new product - it is a derivative of our 10kW fuel cell
inverter
which has been running in the field for two years in various forms.

The MM-3000 and MM-5000 inverters DO have UL's seal of approval, and
also
are FCC certified.

Please feel free to contact me Murray Michaels (engineering support -
mmichaels at advancedenergy.com) or Daniel TwoEagles (sales -
daniel at advancedenergy.com) if you have questions about the product.

Regards,
and happy Thanksgiving to all

Rob Wills

Jay said the Multimode is not ready for prime time. Has anyone installed
a net metered PV system with a Multimode inverter? What do you think?
