Jay,
It's quite simple. You measure the open circuit voltage and compare it with the
other strings. If it is low and you are then reasonably sure you have a bad slate,
go to the center of the string and measure again. It takes about 5 minutes to
isolate a bad slate, or bad connector.  Lee Tavenner
