<<I just deleted the thread with the question about AC pumps starting
loads. I recently have been introduced to consumer grade well pumps
driven with a variable frequency drives... These not only offer "soft
starts", but less on/off cycling and smaller pressure tanks due to their
ability to vary their production level. Anyone have experience running
these beasties on SW inverters... I'm curious. Todd >>

Todd,
We have experience with the Grundfos SQ 115vac sub pumps and they have
worked very nicely in all cases so far.
A 1/3hp 5gpm model is being powered by an Exeltech XP1100 12volt inverter
(very clean sine wave). It consumes 75 amps at 12.3 volts dc and there is no
surge discernable while watching the Tri-Metric meter. It simply ramps up
from zero to 75 amps in 15 to 20 amp increments in about 3 seconds. On this
same pump and well system I tried a Studer "Joker" 800 watt (2,400 watt
surge rating) sine wave inverter to see how it compared with the XP's
performance. The Joker used 85 amps at 12.3vdc to power the very same pump
at identical test conditions (switched back and forth twice to make sure).
The joker's sine wave is not as clean as the Exeltech's on the oscilloscope.
We have two 1/2hp 10gpm pumps working on Trace SW's. One on a SW2512, and
the other on a SW4024. The homeowners of these systems are both satisfied
with the pumps performance, and price I might add. The 10 gpm pumps cost me
$275 and list for $575 I do no not have power consumption #'s on these 1/2hp
pumps yet.
All of these pumps are run into pressure tanks.
