When researching for my book we took a lab calibrated watt-hour digital
bench meter to Circuit City and several name brand stereo stores.

ALL of the satellite receivers consumed the same 14 to 18 watts regardless
of on or off.  You are right, the switch turns the LED on and off!

We also found and listed other stereo and HiFi equipment that had a current
draw very much BELOW their nameplate ratings.  Be careful when sizing off
grid systems using nameplate data, as these values appear to be there only
to comply with a maximum possible current for the UL rating.  For example, a
200 watt stereo amp would only draw that much power when your ears were
bleeding and the walls were shaking.
