Agreed.  I prefer to keep my inverter powered up.  But I would worry 
about the mains voltage smoke alarms - they sound unnecessarily 
greedy.  I have installed a few fire alarm systems with central 'zone 
panels' and a chain of sensors, which would presumably also satisfy 
the safety code.  The panel uses about 20-30 watts (battery charging) 
and that's it.  If you turn it off, it screeches at you.

I switch off our satellite TV system when not in use.  The same goes 
for the printer, and scanner.  I run my fax machine through a timer 
so it's only on during business hours.  When the weather gets 
seriously calm I unplug the cordless phone set-up and plant 
propagator and tropical fish and ...
