Smoke detector flameout [RE-wrenches]

Isn't there an exception in the NEC that allows battery powered smoke
detectors in homes with "no permanent power source"? ( my recollection of
the language).

You could reasonably argue that battery powered detectors are code compliant
since a solar powered home with an inverter in standby mode has no
"permanent power source".
