Nice ideas Carl & Smitty!
I strongly agree with having that bit of reality check for the prospect, but
keep it positive enough to not scare anyone off (maybe stress modularity).
Here is what my response to an initial email inquiry. This could be a
general idea of what that first page of info would look like:

Thank you for your inquiry regarding solar electric systems.
Solar power is truly the “power of independence”. It is your very own source
of clean, quiet, reliable, uninterruptible electricity. There are several
things to consider when designing a system to meet your "power appetite".
Briefly they are:
1. Site analysis- What is the solar insolation quality of the homesite? That
is, where is the best spot to put the solar array? How many hours does the
sun shine on that particular spot?
2. Energy efficiency- Rule of thumb-For every dollar you spend on energy
efficiency you will save three dollars on the solar electric system. Check
out www.fsec.ucf.edu/~bdac/pvsys.htm for one of the best house designs I've
seen that incorporates that rule of thumb to the max. This is a house built
in Florida so it should serve you well.
3. Load Analysis- Wherein we find your daily need for electricity, your
“power appetite”.“Do I want my system to have back-up capabilities in case
the of power outage?” Or,” How many power tools do I need my system to
operate?” How many hours do you run certain lights, hours that you watch
TV, high demand or “surge” loads are just some of the things that need to be
determined for sizing the system. And, quite frankly, there are things that
your system can do but are cost prohibited. Electric water heating and
Central A/C along with any other 240AC loads are things that a PV system can
do, but are very expensive.
4. Consider Modularity- A system can start small and grow to the point of
handling all the loads desired. This may fit a budget better if that is a
consideration.

Realistically, you can expect a cost range from $10-$15 dollars per watt on
PV systems, with the price per watt actually going down the bigger the
system.
I hope this has given you a basic idea of the beginning point for your
system, and that you also have questions that I will be happy to answer.

Wrenches: I think one thing we should look at is a way to screen the
leads before we even deal with them. Perhaps when someone has a lead
to pass on, the potential customer is sent an email directing them to
the site we will be compiling leads on. At this site there would be a
few paragraphs of info about solar , a note letting them know we dont
sell any information and some sobering grid tie info(rough costs/
reality check) and then a small form the person fills out. Their
contact info would load onto a lead list that we access and check off
when we choose to grab the lead. This way the lead has a chance to
semi-qualify himself. Perhaps the list could be catagorized by state
or region.
