Carl,
The two wires that went to your pump now go to the genny (no neutral).
The two from the original 120 source now go to the 120 load. This means
the neutral on the 120 side is the same potential as one leg on the 240
side (ground). To meet code, the generator has to be grounded to this
leg also. Check out NEC 210-9 and 215-11. You can measure the
resistance of the windings to determine which is which if you don't
know, the higher resistance being the 240 side.
