This is a hot question for me as well.  I volunteer for our local water
board and in preparing a presentation on grid tie, I came up with some
pretty astounding numbers.  We have a generous tank so we can pump entirely
during off-peak hours at .09/kWh.  If we can generate all day at, say,
.36/kWh, then we only 1/4 as many kWh generation as compared to our
consumption.

The key to this questions is this:  are we trading in kilowatt hours or
dollars?  If we are trading at the dollar level, the amortization period on
this system approaches 5 years.

By the way, our water district is regulated such that I can't do the work
due to conflict of interest.  This is not a big issue, I can use it to keep
my competition busy!
