Here's another possible fix -- If the system is 24V, Use a Solar 
Boost 4830 controller which gives option of 48V in and 24V out. You 
can wire the array for 48V to charge 24V batt.

Likewise, Solar Boost 50 can take 24V in and drop it to 12V battery.

You can get away with 1/4 the size wire for equivalent power loss.
