My experience has been that PG&E requires a disconnect with an external
handle so it is visible without opening the cover, and it must be adjacent
to the meter. I did talk PG&E into approving a disconnect about 8 feet
away from a meter on condition there be a plaque adjacent to the meter
indicating the location of the disconnect.

I have asked linemen on the street and they know of no requirement or
database of locking disconnects or customers with generating equipment,
inverter or generator based, on premise. I argued with our local PG&E
representative about this but for them this is a safety issue, and they
will not budge.

I do have several jobs going with a unique condition: We desire to use an
existing feed to a greenhouse, garage or well pump for the originally
intended use as a feeder AND as the path for the line-tie system to connect
back to the utility. I have two verbal OKs from PG&E as long as the
feeder/line-tie return be routed through locking disconnect at the meter.
This is a BIG convenience and I am grateful to PG&E for allowing this.
