Can an inverter catch fire? [RE-wrenches]

<x-flowed>I once had an inspector make me take an inverter off the wall and put 
sheet rock behind it for a fire block. It was in an attached shed 
with the other side of the wall in the house, so I could see where he 
was coming from. In a power shed, I don't believe it would be a 
problem nor would code necessarily require it. BTW, I've mounted more 
than a few inverters directly on cinder block walls in power sheds 
and garages. It's a royal pain, but it is doable.
